WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JUST GO FOR IT, AND START LIVING THE LIFE YOU LOVE? WAS THERE A TURNING POINT OR AN ‘A-HA’ MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU NEEDED TO MAKE THE CHANGE?
I feel like I’ve almost always been inspired to live a life I love. However, finding work that I loved was something that I found difficult. I had so many interests and passions – it was confusing to decide which to focus on and pursue. Looking back, there were two main turning points or a-ha moments that changed this for me.
The first turning point was when I went on maternity leave from my Australian Government job. I decided that enough was enough and it was time to make changes. I realised that my method of thoroughly researching and endlessly overthinking my options wasn’t working. It was time to try something different. So I committed to spending a year making decisions based on what ‘felt right’ and actually acting on these decisions even if my brain wasn’t 100% certain that they were wise. This lead to me enrolling in Marie Forleo’s B-School and Julie Parker’s Beautiful You Coaching Academy – and my life and work started to take a very different direction with exciting results.
The second big turning point was when my Dad was suddenly diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. This triggered me to turn my 5 year plan into a NOW plan. I quit my Australian Government job, sold our home, and moved interstate to be near family and pursue my new life coaching business full time.
HOW IS YOUR LIFE DIFFERENT NOW AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
My life is very different now.
Less than two years ago, I was living in Canberra, working for the government, building what we thought was our brand new forever home, living a long way away from my family, and feeling like despite how wonderful my life was that something was missing. I now live in Queensland, work for myself as a Business + Life Passion Coach, have just purchased a beautiful old house near the beach, am living close to my family, and feel more on purpose than ever before. Finding my way of living a passion-fuelled and purposeful life means more than I can articulate. In fact, it means so much to me that I’ve made it my mission in life to help others discover their version of a passion-fuelled and purposeful life too.
WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST FEAR OR BLOCK (EMOTIONAL, MENTAL OR PHYSICAL) THAT YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE, AND HOW DID YOU BREAK THROUGH IT?
My biggest block was overthinking things and sitting in analysis paralysis trying to get all the answers before taking any steps or moving in any direction. In this overthinking process, I also worried what others would think if I chose a direction that could be seen as a bit alternative or risky.
I primarily did four things to overcome this block:
1. I practiced listening to my intuition or heart more (which didn’t come naturally to me at the time).
2. I focused on what I did know rather than on what I didn’t know. So instead of experiencing analysis paralysis as I attempted to resolve confusions or mysteries – I would focus on what I could do to move forward based on what I did know.
3. I started to take action even when I wasn’t 100% certain it was wise and often before I felt ready.
4. I reflected on what I would do if I believed in myself and was confident in my abilities.
As I did these things, and took consistent action, I got clearer and clearer on what I wanted to do and began to break through my blocks and barriers.
HOW DID OPENING UP AND ‘BEING AUTHENTICALLY YOU’ AFFECT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU OR YOUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEM?
For me, this has been a gradual journey over a long period of time – and it has affected the people around me in different ways. I’ve lost friends and loved ones as I’ve become more authentically me, opened up more, and set boundaries as a result. However, I’ve also discovered new friendships and deepened existing relationships with people who truly ‘get’ me. In addition to this, I’ve also inspired others to create change in their own lives and work – for example, my husband started to pursue his own dream of running a web building business.
WHAT IS YOUR TRUE ESSENCE? THE NATURAL PART OF YOUR BEING THAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL.
Oh my, what a deep and complicated question that I suspect is impossible to truly capture in words!
I think my true essence and what makes me special is the unique blend or concoction of traits, values, passions, super powers, and quirks that is me. Each of these traits might not be particularly special on their own – but their combination and relationship with each other – that’s what makes me special and one-of-a-kind.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOURSELF?
I love that I’m a growth-oriented person and a life-long learner. I also love that I have a talent for helping people find their uniqueness and use it to live their version of a passion-fuelled and purposeful life. I love that I’m generous and giving – and that I’m determined and driven too.
WHERE DO YOU FIND BEAUTY AND INSPIRATION?
I find beauty and inspiration all around me and within me too. In nature. In my loved ones. In the people who anger, frustrate or have hurt me.
AS A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO DO?
I loved to make things, to read, to write, to spend time with my friends, and to watch tv shows or films with strong female leads.
WHAT LIGHTS YOU UP AND WHY?
My family light me up. My little boy for example is at an age where his personality and sense of humour is shining through and getting to see this and full experience love is beyond words incredible.
My clients light me up. They are big hearted and mission driven people who want to make a difference in the world. Witnessing them learn to believe in themselves, discover their uniqueness, and liberate their inner superhero in their personal lives, work, and passion projects constantly inspires and excites me.
My peers light me up. Seeing fellow life and business coaches use their uniqueness to make a difference in the lives of real people is awe-inspiring.
Those who use their platform and uniqueness to create social change and contribute to social good light me up. When I see people who have a platform or audience use their resources and uniqueness to make a positive difference in the world through their advocacy and humanitarian work, philanthropy, and non-profit endeavours I feel sunbeams shining from my heart and soul.
WHEN LIFE GETS BUSY, OVERWHELMING AND THE NEGATIVITY STARTS TO CREEP IN, HOW DO YOU UNWIND AND ALLOW YOURSELF TO ‘JUST BE’?
First of all, I consciously remind myself that self care is just as important as every item on my To Do list. Then I focus on my emergency self care list which is full of activities that energise and calm me. This includes for example spending time in nature, moving my body, painting, reading, meditating, journaling, petting my dog, or chatting to a trusted love one. I find that when I’m feeling overwhelmed or busy, it’s usually because I’ve been overworking and have dropped the ‘self care’ ball – so making an effort to amp this up will help me unwind and ‘just be’.
WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE WANTING TO RECONNECT WITH THEIR OWN NATURAL WAY OF BEING AND FIND THE BEAUTY WITHIN THEMSELVES?
I believe that you must discover and embrace your uniqueness in order to best be of service to yourself, your loved ones and the world. I would therefore encourage you to get curious about yourself and what lights you up. It can be fun and rewarding to reconnect and discover your own beauty, passions and talents. Explore, play, prioritise yourself and enjoy learning more about you and your unique formula to living a passion-fuelled and purposeful life.
