beautiful being

|  KATHERINE WILSON  |

Oh wow! I was lucky enough to be able to score this lady as my wedding photographer, and she did not disappoint! Katherine is a truly amazing woman, with so much talent, but most of all, I love her passion and authenticity. She does not pretend to be like everyone else in her industry. She has such a natural, REAL style to her photography- and in her life too!

Seriously, if you ever need a photographer, get in contact with her!

Photographer Katherine Wilson is a 30-something year old wife, mother and business owner trying to create authentic imagery. She wants her kids to see that you can do something you love, survive getting knocked back, and still make it work if you press on hard enough. She wants couples to see beyond their wedding day and invest into their marriage. She wants mums to see beyond their piles of washing and into the beauty of their connections with their kids. And she gets to do that more and more these days. Which is pretty awesome.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JUST GO FOR IT, AND START LIVING THE LIFE YOU LOVE? WAS THERE A TURNING POINT OR AN ‘A-HA’ MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU NEEDED TO MAKE THE CHANGE?

You know when there’s something in your life that has been dormant for so long – that it’s easier to just keep ignoring it rather than taking up the challenge of actually exploring it? Photography is one of those things for me. For me, I’ve been making pictures in my head for as long as I can remember. But I’m not technically minded, so I could never figure out how to actually manipulate my camera to get it to take the photo I wanted. So I just gave up. When I had my kids though, it became vital for me to be able to capture them authentically myself, so I was willing to do just about anything to figure it out. A few non-successful courses later I found the Define School and have never looked back. It was literally as though blinders had come off my eyes and I was finally given the tools to create. It was amazing.

HOW IS YOUR LIFE DIFFERENT NOW AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

I guess owning and running your own business is the dream for most people. It’s incredible and freeing and amazing, and at the same time financially stressful, complicated, and almost impossible to maintain a great work/life balance with! In saying that, I would never go back, but it certainly has its challenges!

WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST FEAR OR BLOCK (EMOTIONAL, MENTAL OR PHYSICAL) THAT YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE, AND HOW DID YOU BREAK THROUGH IT?

It’s so hard these days to be taken seriously as a photographer. Cameras are so advanced, that practically anyone can just purchase a good quality camera, stick it on auto, make a FB business page and bam. And I find that a lot of people can’t tell the difference between what they do, and what I do. And thats ok. But frustrating as anything. It takes a lot of mental strength, and self respect to not lower your standards for anything, or anyone. It’s also very hard for me to accept that I am in any way shape or form ‘good’ at what I do. When I see my work, I see all the things I would do different the next time. I can appreciate it’s not bad perhaps, but I just have so much further I want to grow – that it’s super hard for me to accept my journey. I need reminders, to look at where I’ve come from rather than comparison to others.

WHERE DO YOU FIND BEAUTY AND INSPIRATION?

Hmmmm, for me as a busy mum and wife and business owner – I find beauty and inspiration in nature, music and definitely light. Light inspires me more than anything. Being disconnected from social media and technology and walking around noticing light listening to music is basically the dream! And it doesn’t happen very often! I’m not inspired to shoot landscapes or nature as such, but the actual existence of it and being able to walk amongst it and breathe it in inspires me to shoot people and connections better.

AS A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO DO?

Everything. Hahaha. My parents are always complaining that I sent them broke with swimming and soccer and dance and piano and every lesson under the sun. I was social, busy and loved life. A lot has changed, but being a wedding photographer and experiencing dancing again has definitely re-energised my love of dance!

I think it’s actually super important to reflect on this, and actually try and do something about it. When you become an ‘adult’ sometimes you lose a lot of the joy of childhood, which is ok I guess, everyone has to mature and grow but when did we stop having fun? Recently I was invited to play paintball for a friends’ birthday and I immediately said yes, as its something I’ve always wanted to do. Then I reflected and felt way too old, and like I’d missed my chance to do it. I thought about various ways of getting out of it, but finally just sucked up the courage and did it. And it was the most fun I’ve had in ages! Definitely keen to do more things that I feel like I’ve ‘outgrown’ and just play more :)

WHAT LIGHTS YOU UP AND WHY?

My family. Kids are crazy tiring, and painful at times, and just not very conducive to effectiveness as a business owner at the best of times! But they make me laugh, cry, have fun, just ‘live’ more. And the feeling of their warm little bodies and limbs all tangled up in mine on the couch is irreplaceable. And everything I am doing is for them. They are my motivation for working hard, my muses. I would do anything for those three crazy kids and my amazing man.

I recently started homeschooling my eldest for a bunch of reasons, which is something I NEVER thought I would do. But these little people shape us and grow us in ways that no peer ever could. And I’m better for it. But also way more tired! I definitely would have to say coffee and tea lights me up too. Haha.

WHEN LIFE GETS BUSY, OVERWHELMING AND THE NEGATIVITY STARTS TO CREEP IN, HOW DO YOU UNWIND AND ALLOW YOURSELF TO ‘JUST BE’?

My husband is the best at this. He can sense when I’m at my limit and forces me to literally switch my computer off and relax with him. I’m also a christian, and I find the ultimate way for me to ‘just be’ is to reconnect and spend some time reflecting on God’s word and listening to worship music. It centres me in a way that nothing else is the world can, or I would ever expect to. There’s sooooo much noise in society today. Switching off is essential.

Something else I participate in is the “Story of Me” project– a photography project that is geared towards getting women (particularly mothers) IN the frame with their kids. It’s such an amazing and inspiring community and I love that I’m slowly getting more photos with me in them! And taking photos for ME is a big thing.

My biggest negativity is centred around when I don’t get any enquiries for awhile, or I meet with a client and they go another way. I become a little ball of negativity and want to give up. When I choose to pick up the camera and create instead of reacting negatively, I can sense my creativity and inspiration rising again and it all makes sense. Photographing my own family, with no rules, no prizes or need to ‘likes’, just for me is a big deal. I post them on my website to keep track here and I love seeing them come together. Check it out here.

WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE WANTING TO RECONNECT WITH THEIR OWN NATURAL WAY OF BEING AND FIND THE BEAUTY WITHIN THEMSELVES?

Gosh – advice. I guess for me, life has taken me in a whole bunch of directions I never would have expected. I thought when I had kids I would stop work all together, my husband would make a great wage and we’d live in a beautiful house in the country (pipe dream I know!). Instead we’ve battled illness and financial hardship and career changes and loneliness. But the philosophy behind my business and the way I shoot is that ‘A story doesn’t have to be grand, to be yours’ and its something I am forever trying to instil in my own heart and I guess my clients is that life is messy. But there’s beauty in amongst the chaos, sometimes its easy to see, sometimes you have to dig for it. But its always there. Keep looking. And grace. Give yourself some grace everyday. There’s always tomorrow :)

WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE WANTING TO RECONNECT WITH THEIR OWN NATURAL WAY OF BEING AND FIND THE BEAUTY WITHIN THEMSELVES?

Tired. Haha. Most of the time I’m just bewildered and thankful that people pay me to do something I love. I drink a lot of coffee. I am becoming my mother and love nothing more than curling up with a cup of tea and a good conversation with a loved one.

I could feel myself getting so ‘busy’ with the pick up and drop off for school etc. and the stress of getting to work at the hospital and everything just mounting. One day I just said. Enough is enough. And even though life is busy now in other ways, it’s still better. And I wouldn’t change it for anything.
