beautiful being

| EMILY BATHGATE |

As someone who is inspired by nature and absolutely loves natural therapies and using natural products for my body and in my home, I feel completely aligned with everything that Emily is about. Designed to relax, ground and inspire, the range of products from her business ‘The Purist’ are just gorgeous, and I feel that the amount of care and intention that Emily puts into everything she creates is just so special.

Emily is a naturopathic student who makes naturally therapeutic products for body, soul and home with the intention of helping as many women as possible to live their healthiest, happiest lives. Inspired by nature and natural therapies (particularly herbal medicine and aromatherapy), Emily hand makes natural skincare, herbal teas, and candles. As well as being most of the way through her Naturopathy degree, she’s an avid writer and loves sharing what she learns – in a fun, relatable way – through her blog.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JUST GO FOR IT, AND START LIVING THE LIFE YOU LOVE? WAS THERE A TURNING POINT OR AN ‘A-HA’ MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU NEEDED TO MAKE THE CHANGE?

My business was born really organically alongside my movement into the wonderful world of wellness. For me, it wasn’t so much one moment behind the decision to start The Purist; more a collection of moments. I’m quite a big believer in intuition and in everything happening for a reason, and so this collection of moments has led me towards this path I’m now on, and to know that it’s exactly the one I’m meant to be travelling.

I think the most prominent two defining moments amongst the collection were my Mum falling ill, and my career change. I was originally in the fashion industry, working as a model, stylist and designer, all set for the move from Perth to Sydney to attend fashion college; but my Mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer, facing complications with the treatment and surgeries, and I decided that everything about the move and my career and study goals just wasn’t sitting quite right. I believe that my purpose is to help and to heal, that that’s my calling. I just hadn’t been listening fully before.

HOW IS YOUR LIFE DIFFERENT NOW AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

It’s definitely a lot busier! Studying, working and running my business is a constant juggle, and I always feel like I’ve got far more to do than I have the time to do it all. But I wouldn’t change a thing. Everything I do is fuelled with love, and I’m surrounded by beautiful, passionate, inspiring people every day. I know I’m on the right path, and all that I do and learn has enabled me the ability to consciously make informed choices in every aspect of my life to ensure I’m living as healthily and happily as I can.

WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST FEAR OR BLOCK (EMOTIONAL, MENTAL OR PHYSICAL) THAT YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE, AND HOW DID YOU BREAK THROUGH IT?

I think that if we’re being honest, little road blocks pop up here and there for all of us. In running my business, there have been quite a few, with many of them causing me to contemplate whether I’m doing the right thing and whether I should continue. And it’s the same with my health; I’ll get lazy with my diet and supplements and exercise from time to time, not feel a huge difference, and wonder if it’s all worth it. But of course it is, and I always get back up and keep on going. I know deep down that I’m on the right path, doing the right thing.

HOW DID OPENING UP AND ‘BEING AUTHENTICALLY YOU’ AFFECT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU OR YOUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEM?

I think that becoming our authentic selves is a journey, and I know that I’m still on mine. The more comfortable I become with myself and my true self and where I’m going in life, the more comfortable my relationships with others become. I have a beautiful partner and family, and so many beautiful friends, and they all inspire and encourage me to embrace my authentic self every day. Those people who don’t so much seem to come and go easily – the people and relationships who don’t serve me just seem to automatically fizzle out without upset as I let go of them. Life is getting easier and more beautiful every day :)

DID YOU FACE ANY JUDGEMENTS OR CRITICISMS, WHETHER FROM YOURSELF OR OTHERS?

I’ve come from a background of being incredibly self-critical – I unfortunately suffered depression and anxiety as a teenager, mainly relating to my self-image and self-confidence, and it’s still something that I struggle with from time to time (although, thankfully, on a much smaller scale). It’s something that I have to work really hard on, but I feel like I’m starting to build some strength in those muscles nowadays, and it’s becoming far easier to pull myself back into believing in myself, respecting my boundaries and limitations, embracing both my perfections and imperfections, and loving my life and who I am.

WHAT IS YOUR TRUE ESSENCE? THE NATURAL PART OF YOUR BEING THAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL.

I’ve been told that I’m a carer, a nurturer, and a good leader. I can feel it in my heart, too. I know that I can embrace my true essence as all of these things in my current and future roles (especially as a Naturopath in a year or two’s time), and can’t wait to do so!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOURSELF?

That I have the passion, compassion, knowledge, and desire to keep learning and absorbing to help others lead their healthiest, happiest lives.

WHERE DO YOU FIND BEAUTY AND INSPIRATION?

Being quite a creative soul, I love visual inspiration. Photos – whether they’re in a book or magazine, or on Pinterest or Instagram. I have always been a big fan of cutting or tearing out photos (of houses, gardens, outfits…anything!) and sticking them into journals, but now I have Pinterest the possibilities (and boards) are endless.

AS A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO DO?

I’ve always loved dreaming, making and doing. I ran several small businesses as a really young girl, actually – I’d operate out of my tree house. Unfortunately I was shut down for a while after cutting the majority of my little sister’s hair off following a short stint as a six-year-old hairdresser. I also won a few awards for poetry, writing and art.

WHAT LIGHTS YOU UP AND WHY?

Spending time with those who inspire and motivate me, and who remind me to see the best in myself (I’m super lucky that my partner and friends totally fit into that category!).

Planning – I’m a little OCD, so a to-do list (or any list, really) always makes me feel amazing.

The ocean (because negative ions, duh).

And making! So much love goes into every product I make. I hope more than anything that my customers feel that in my products.

WHEN LIFE GETS BUSY, OVERWHELMING AND THE NEGATIVITY STARTS TO CREEP IN, HOW DO YOU UNWIND AND ALLOW YOURSELF TO ‘JUST BE’?

I can definitely feel when those days come on, and know they’re the times I need to get stuck into some yoga and/or run myself a big, beautiful bath. I also love my Gaia oracle cards for those moments where I’m struggling to make a decision, and feeling lots of negativity and anxiety about the situation. But sometimes there’s just nothing better than a good cry, a cuddle from Mum, and an early night! However I decide to deal with it, I remind myself that it’s alright to feel whatever it is that I’m feeling in that moment, that it doesn’t determine how I’ll feel in the days ahead, and that I can get through whatever life throws at me.

WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE WANTING TO RECONNECT WITH THEIR OWN NATURAL WAY OF BEING AND FIND THE BEAUTY WITHIN THEMSELVES?

Don’t be afraid. Don’t limit yourself. Live the life that you love to lead. I truly believe in focusing on the good, and the wonderful things that we want to attract into our lives. Be honest with yourself about what it is that you truly want to do, feel, achieve…and go get it, girl!

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE YOU?

It feels like a gigantic, beautiful, exciting, exhilarating, journey. And I love it!
