| COURTNEY DURR |
I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Courtney yet, but she’s someone who absolutely inspires me through the online world. She’s this radiant beam of positivity, I just light up even reading her posts! Seeing photos of the huge smile on her face when she’s outside immersed in nature, being wild and free, she truly inspires me to get out and move my body! I especially love her message and passion behind what she’s doing- it’s not about how you look, but it’s about loving yourself. I’ve always struggled with fitness myself and generally am not a fan of gyms or ‘organised fitness groups’, so I never thought I’d say this but I wish I lived closer to Courtney so I could join in her incredible bootcamps! (If you’re in New Zealand check them out!)
Courtney Durr is the co-founder of Body Love NZ, a Lululemon ambassador, and a lover of life! She has a back ground in sports and personal training but through years in the gym industry she felt that “health” was focused too much around diet and exercise and not enough around mental health and self love. She decided to change this and started bootcamps, retreats, and workshops with her business partner, Abbey, with the sole focus of helping women to love the beautiful creatures they are!
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JUST GO FOR IT, AND START LIVING THE LIFE YOU LOVE? WAS THERE A TURNING POINT OR AN ‘A-HA’ MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU NEEDED TO MAKE THE CHANGE?
What helped me to start living the life I love (running my own business, having freedom, travel, living with a purpose to make a positive difference in the world) was doing the guided meditation from the book Playing Big by Tara Mohr. It’s a meditation where you visualise you going to visit the future you 20 years from now. You meet her at her home, see what she looks like, what her energy feels like. You walk in to her home and you get a look into the interior feel. You sit down with her and you have the opportunity to ask her questions. Questions like, “What do I do to get from where I am to where you are?” “What do you do for a job and what do you love about it?” and you really hear what your inner self knows to be true and knows to be important.
When you do this meditation you then want to start living life more and more like the future you would. Slowly starting to dress, act, and speak as though she would. I thought about the job she had and what I needed to do to get closer to living my dream and it was at that point that I knew my job as a personal trainer at a gym with a reasonably secure pay was not in that vision. I had outgrown that phase of my life and it was time to dive into the unknown in search of the true me.
HOW IS YOUR LIFE DIFFERENT NOW AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
Me now vs. me three years ago.. hahahahahaha. We are completely different people (which, I’m relieved about!!). We don’t hang around the same people or environments, we don’t look the same and we definitely don’t act the same. My goals used to be shallow and self-centred and now my goals are fuelled by purpose and are people-centred. I don’t regret anything but I’m just proud when I look back and see how much I’ve grown and that means a lot to me. That day by day nothing seems to change but then you look back and you’ve realised everything has changed.
WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST FEAR OR BLOCK (EMOTIONAL, MENTAL OR PHYSICAL) THAT YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE, AND HOW DID YOU BREAK THROUGH IT?
Greatest fear, which I know a lot of people can relate to, was (okay still is) the fear of failure. Everything seems to be going so well and then my mind starts to think “when is the bad stuff going to start happening” “this is just a trend, people will get sick of it soon” “somebody is going to do it better than you”.. All these cray cray thoughts that I know is just my mind trying to protect me from failure, risk, and embarrassment but were also holding me back. The way I broke through the fear was by accepting it (not resisting it) and continuing to follow my dreams despite the uncomfortable feeling I had.
WHAT IS YOUR TRUE ESSENCE? THE NATURAL PART OF YOUR BEING THAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL.
My true essence is happiness. Whether I am having a bad day, whether it is pouring and windy outside, whether I’m bored I always find a reason to smile. I am filled to the brim with happiness and the fact that I want to share it with the universe is what makes me special.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOURSELF?
I love my smile!! I love the fact that I only ever want to make people feel loved and valued (because they deserve it!!)
WHERE DO YOU FIND BEAUTY AND INSPIRATION?
All around me!! From role models, nature, history, art. I tune in to so many different sources that continue to inspire and propel me. Also Pinterest is amazing for inspo haha.
AS A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO DO?
Play sport! It was my life!! Any team sport I had time for I was in with a grin. My favourite sport was softball, which I even got to represent my country in at one point (long long time ago). That’s definitely what led me in to studying sport and then working in the health and fitness industry, I’ve always been one to follow what I love doing.
WHAT LIGHTS YOU UP AND WHY?
Adventure, love, and freedom lights me up!!! Adventure for me is about trying new things, getting outdoors, jumping out of planes, into mud, ocean or the likes. It’s about travel and meeting interesting people and it’s about never falling into a routine that doesn’t excite me.
Love lights me up, it’s what makes the world go round. When people act out of love it opens the door for vulnerability, understanding, and courage. It creates a better environment and inspires others to spread that beautiful feeling onto others.
WHEN LIFE GETS BUSY, OVERWHELMING AND THE NEGATIVITY STARTS TO CREEP IN, HOW DO YOU UNWIND AND ALLOW YOURSELF TO ‘JUST BE’?
I read a lot of personal development books and YouTube videos or podcasts. When I wake up in the morning, instead of going on social media, I tune into Tony Robbins or Alan Watts or somebody amazing like that. It sets me up with a positive mindset to attack the day with. One of my happy places is also on my own at a café or by the ocean with a decent coffee.
WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE WANTING TO RECONNECT WITH THEIR OWN NATURAL WAY OF BEING AND FIND THE BEAUTY WITHIN THEMSELVES?
To stay in your own lane. You have been GIFTED this wonderful life and body so how do you plan on spending it? By complaining and wishing you were someone else? Everybody has their own problems and insecurities, but everybody also has their own unique gifts and qualities (including you!!). Focus on your qualities, focus on all the things you can do with your body instead of placing so much energy on something as small as the way your body looks. You are far more than your surface; I hope you all believe that!!
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE YOU?
GENUINELY AMAZING. I love my life.
