WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JUST GO FOR IT, AND START LIVING THE LIFE YOU LOVE? WAS THERE A TURNING POINT OR AN ‘A-HA’ MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU NEEDED TO MAKE THE CHANGE?
Great question. I wouldn’t say there was one particular moment that made me take the plunge. It was more a culmination of moments. I had been working in Events & Marketing for over ten years when I decided it was time for a change. I had also been in the corporate world for the same period of time- meaning I had gained a great wealth of experiences and knowledge for how successful organisations thrive & the pitfalls to avoid. However, I had become restless and knew i needed a new challenge/project to sink my teeth into- but what that was… I did not yet know.
I have always been fascinated by people & human behaviour, so I decided to undertake my coaching qualifications, to give myself some new skills & options… and this was probably the final piece of the puzzle that drew me towards wanting to venture out on my own.
I absolutely LOVED the entire process of training to be a coach, but at the end of it all I did not have the desire to make this my career. I realised quite quickly that i wanted to use these skills in a different way. I then sought advice from a business coach who was able to help elicit my passion for combining my skills & experiences (Events, Marketing & Coaching) and to create a business around these amazing areas. And from this, The Daily Guru was born.
This entire process did take me quite some time – but I am so grateful that I was patient and trusting of the process, as I now get to work doing the things I truly love and happen to be good at.
HOW IS YOUR LIFE DIFFERENT NOW AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
The biggest difference for me has been learning that to have your own business, you have to consistently demonstrate a huge amount of self discipline (and, to be honest, I’m still learning this every day).
If you do not demonstrate the self discipline that is required, the work load quite quickly piles up & can run away from you. This does happen in all businesses, however when the business is your own, the buck stops with you! Also, as a small, start up business, you have fewer resources available to you – therefore self discipline is one of the greatest tools to assist you with moving through the huge volume of varying deadlines and projects, which are all part of running your own company.
Looking back I would now say I unknowingly used to demonstrate very little self discipline in my life/work, getting distracted by the shiniest, funnest, coolest, new project and letting my focus & energy go wherever felt best. I did not respond well to things that felt uncomfortable – so I avoided them by distracting myself with new, more exciting things. This is a very fun way to live, but often was a double edged sword… resulting in fewer longer term results/rewards. I am so grateful that I am now able to appreciate the importance of self discipline and how getting comfortable with the uncomfortable is how we actually grow.
WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST FEAR OR BLOCK (EMOTIONAL, MENTAL OR PHYSICAL) THAT YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE, AND HOW DID YOU BREAK THROUGH IT?
Putting myself out there for others to judge. This is part and parcel of having your own business – you put so much of yourself into what you are creating, it’s very difficult to separate yourself from it all. This was a big fear of mine. What if people don’t like it? What if they think its silly? What if no one subscribes…? But thankfully my passion to build DG was greater than my fear of being judged – so I pressed ahead anyway.
The way I overcame this fear was, firstly, by being reminded by a beautiful coach friend of mine (Amelia Harvey) that we are not in control of what others think and that we are never going to be able to please everyone- nor do we want to. This was such a wonderful piece of advice as it made me realise that The Daily Guru wasn’t for everyone. I knew who I was building the platform for and they are the people I should be focusing my energy on. And should this audience have any important feedback to offer, we would take this onboard with the perspective of growing & improving- instead of taking anything personally.
And secondly, on a personal level, I had to learn to stop worrying about what other people think. I have always been someone who cares a lot about others and as a result, I care a lot about what they think & feel. As I have grown in my professional career, I’ve realised the importance of not letting this emotional response takeover my actions.
DID YOU FACE ANY JUDGEMENTS OR CRITICISMS, WHETHER FROM YOURSELF OR OTHERS?
No, I didn’t, people were hugely supportive and helpful. I actually think the fear of judgement & criticism was scarier than the actual turn of events (as is often the case).
WHAT IS YOUR TRUE ESSENCE? THE NATURAL PART OF YOUR BEING THAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL.
I would say my unique quality is making others feel like anything is possible with the right amount of focus, support & energy. I truly believe this to be true and notice how infectious this belief of mine becomes when shared with those around me. People seem empowered by my belief & my encouragement of them and is something I feel very grateful for, as it’s quite a special experience to be a part of (watching someone start to believe greater things are possible).
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOURSELF?
I love my self belief – that anything is possible if you really want it. Living in Sydney, Australia, we are in a unique & incredibly fortunate position (compared to 90% of the rest of the world), that all you have to do is; believe it’s possible, believe you deserve it, have great focus, work (pretty damn) hard and then the magic happens. This is something I have learnt from my amazing fiancé.
WHERE DO YOU FIND BEAUTY AND INSPIRATION?
From so many different things… people, places, experiences, the outdoors, other peoples work, photography… I think you can find beauty & inspiration from so many areas of your life, if you have enough space (mentally) to really see it.
WHEN LIFE GETS BUSY, OVERWHELMING AND THE NEGATIVITY STARTS TO CREEP IN, HOW DO YOU UNWIND AND ALLOW YOURSELF TO ‘JUST BE’?
A hot bath is my simple go-to if I’ve have an overwhelming day. But if it ends up being an overwhelming week or month… then often a little more is required :) Normally it’s a case of slowing things down for a little while, to help get myself back on track – into the right rhythm & mindset again. During this time, I will often find myself saying ‘no’ a lot more to invitations, new/extra projects, commitments, etc, to help me create more space & time for myself.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE YOU?
Light, happy, driven & grateful. x
