WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JUST GO FOR IT, AND START LIVING THE LIFE YOU LOVE? WAS THERE A TURNING POINT OR AN ‘A-HA’ MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU NEEDED TO MAKE THE CHANGE?
Two and a half years ago we packed up our home in Sydney and moved to Melbourne. It had been a dream of ours (my husband Matt and mine) for quite a few years. We now live in St Kilda and have a business creating natural body and skincare products.
There have been a few moments in life that made us realise life happens very quickly and you could be forever waiting for the “right time”, but you realise you make the time right, you choose the time to do it and so we did. We started Babs Bodycare after we started focusing more on our health after we had lost a family member to cancer and my ongoing search for an effective natural deodorant saw me start trialling and making my own products. Friends and family loved it and so Babs began.
HOW IS YOUR LIFE DIFFERENT NOW AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
Having a business is a totally new experience. There is always something new to learn and a challenge to work through but it’s exciting and I get to wake up every day and do exactly what I love. Creating products that can have an impact on our health and the environment is what I am most passionate about and even though at times it can be a little overwhelming running a business I wouldn’t change it.
WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST FEAR OR BLOCK (EMOTIONAL, MENTAL OR PHYSICAL) THAT YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE, AND HOW DID YOU BREAK THROUGH IT?
Fear of the unknown. Starting up a business that you are so passionate about but not having half the knowledge or answers to is incredibly daunting. Fear of failure. Doubt. Questioning whether you’ve made the right decision, done the right thing, if others will like it. You feel quite vulnerable when you create something from scratch that is purely your passion and hard work but I’m incredibly blessed to have very supportive family, husband and friends and have met some amazing women who are also passionate about what they do that have helped inspire and encourage me to get where I am today.
HOW DID OPENING UP AND ‘BEING AUTHENTICALLY YOU’ AFFECT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU OR YOUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEM?
All my friends and family are all so supportive in everything I do and it is so lovely to see how truly happy they are for me. There is so much love when we get together and I am so thankful for that.
WHAT IS YOUR TRUE ESSENCE? THE NATURAL PART OF YOUR BEING THAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL.
Wow! Putting it into words isn’t going to do it justice but there is something amazing that when you meet someone you get a sense of who they are and as you continue to get to know them this shines through.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOURSELF?
My passion and creativity. My energy for what I do. I love to have fun. And concentrating on the positive things in life and find the beauty in the little day to day things.
WHERE DO YOU FIND BEAUTY AND INSPIRATION?
I see beauty everywhere. I love watching people laugh together or kids playing. I am in awe of the beauty and power of nature. It can be calm, gentle and magical or intense and powerful. The intricate details of a flower as a bee collects pollen or the strength and flexibility of a hundred year old fig tree. I also find inspiration from other women who are going after their dream and living their passion.
WHAT LIGHTS YOU UP AND WHY?
◇ My passion. Getting to do what I love every day. All things natural, health and the environment – I could talk for days about these topics.
◇ My beautiful friends and family. I love catching up with them, normally over a good meal.
◇ My husband. He’s a wonderful human being, my best friend and the greatest support I could ask for.
WHEN LIFE GETS BUSY, OVERWHELMING AND THE NEGATIVITY STARTS TO CREEP IN, HOW DO YOU UNWIND AND ALLOW YOURSELF TO ‘JUST BE’?
A glass of wine and some dark chocolate. Haha.
I really try to talk about things before it gets to that point but sometimes a good cry helps. Being able to switch off and listen to what I need, not to keep pushing through but to take the time and relax, have a nap, head out for a walk, get some sunshine, it can certainly change your mind set.
I also love yoga and meditation and this certainly has helped me to keep a clearer, calmer, more focused mind too.
WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE WANTING TO RECONNECT WITH THEIR OWN NATURAL WAY OF BEING AND FIND THE BEAUTY WITHIN THEMSELVES?
Start listening to your body and be aware of your needs. I think we, as women, can be very hard on ourselves and feel guilty for taking time out. Listen to what you need. Learn to breathe (I’ve found yoga and meditation extremely beneficial) and be in the moment. Enjoy the little things.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE YOU?
I’m so happy to be me. I’m on my journey and enjoying every minute of it. Having a business is tough at times but I have amazing people around me who support and love me I feel so blessed to be living my passion every day.
