I’m a huge fan of Amelia, she’s someone I look up to and the type of coach aspire to be like. I absolutely love her style and the way she authentically and intuitively combines therapies and techniques that feel aligned with her. She’s the type of person you feel drawn to, as even through social media you can feel her vibrant, soulful and fun-loving energy.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JUST GO FOR IT, AND START LIVING THE LIFE YOU LOVE? WAS THERE A TURNING POINT OR AN ‘A-HA’ MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU NEEDED TO MAKE THE CHANGE?
Living the life I love didn’t happen in a moment. It was really a series of small decisions and trusting my gut along the way by moving towards things that interested me or made me feel good. It’s always a work in progress!
On the other hand, healing my relationship with food was kind of an a-ha moment – I can remember the moment when I decided I was sick of obsessing over what I ate and trying to lose weight. I decided to just eat what I felt like eating and focus more on feeling good than having to stick to a diet or exercise plan. I am SO much healthier for it!
WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST FEAR OR BLOCK (EMOTIONAL, MENTAL OR PHYSICAL) THAT YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE, AND HOW DID YOU BREAK THROUGH IT?
I used to be so fearful of feeling my emotions. I would do anything to distract myself from how I was feeling from eat to watch TV to get drunk. I thought that my emotions could hurt me and that I was better off putting on a brave face and bottling things up. I was so nasty to myself!
My inner critic would invalidate every feeling and I didn’t have the awareness to be gentle with myself. I remember one day when I was feeling anxious and I was doing everything to get rid of the feeling. I sat down to meditate and went into battle with the anxiety, trying to make it go away. I realised my approach wasn’t working so I tried the opposite – softening and surrendering to the physical experience of the emotion. I couldn’t believe how quickly my anxiety dissolved.
Softening is so much more powerful than struggling! I believe my commitment to feeling my feelings and trusting my intuition to give me the answers I need when I need them has been central to getting me to where I am today.
HOW DID OPENING UP AND ‘BEING AUTHENTICALLY YOU’ AFFECT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU OR YOUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEM?
Being authentic allowed me to stop people pleasing and to really show up for people. It also helped me see the role I was playing in different relationships and empower me to change difficult ones. For example, I had a very strained relationship with one family member until I took responsibility for the fact that I was playing the victim. And that I took negative expectations into every interaction with them!
This helped me turn my frustration into compassion and meet this person with more openness – our relationship has improved so much!
In every relationship, I know that the other person is doing their best with where they’re at and how they’re feeling. I don’t expect other people to be responsible for making me feel good and I don’t take other people’s behaviour personally because I know it has nothing to do with me!
DID YOU FACE ANY JUDGEMENTS OR CRITICISMS, WHETHER FROM YOURSELF OR OTHERS?
I am very lucky to have a generally very supportive audience and family and friends. As is the case is for most people, my harshest judgments or criticisms come from my inner critic! Over time I’ve got better at letting these go and being gentle and accepting with myself – now it’s one of the main things I help my private clients with as well.
WHAT IS YOUR TRUE ESSENCE? THE NATURAL PART OF YOUR BEING THAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL.
I am very calm and peaceful (I wasn’t always this way!). I’m often told I have a very calming energy, which is lovely to hear. I’m a lover – my partner always says that no one loves as much as I do! I’ve learned that there’s no point approaching things in a half hearted way so I try to show up fully, whole heartedly and authentically in every area of my life.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOURSELF?
I love that I am intuitive and thoughtful. I love that I help people to feel better about them selves. I love that I am naturally curious and open-minded – I’m constantly learning and evolving my ideas. I love that I can answer this question – 5 years ago it would have made me squirm but I’ve worked lots on developing healthy self-esteem and appreciating who I am!
WHERE DO YOU FIND BEAUTY AND INSPIRATION?
In the people I love, in nature, in meditation. Any time that I am feeling really connected to the present moment I find beauty and inspiration.
AS A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO DO?
I was always outdoors, obsessed with animals, getting creative, and I was a real bookworm – I used to wake up early before school so I could read! Not a whole lot has changed!
WHAT LIGHTS YOU UP AND WHY?
My man definitely – he is my biggest support and cheerleader. I feel like I’m effortlessly my best self when I’m with him. Running events like my Inner Peace Party or speaking at events really lights me up – I love it! Working with my private clients and running Soul Sister Sessions really inspires me. And then any of my self care practices – movement, meditation, time in nature, journaling, reading, even just a cup of my favourite tea! I also LOVE travelling, I feel very lit up and free when I’m off exploring the world.
WHEN LIFE GETS BUSY, OVERWHELMING AND THE NEGATIVITY STARTS TO CREEP IN, HOW DO YOU UNWIND AND ALLOW YOURSELF TO ‘JUST BE’?
I start with movement, then a bath with magnesium salts, essential oils and a good book, or an ocean swim. Salt water has magical healing powers for me! I have a journaling sesh to get everything out of my head, reconnect with a meditation, and then an early night. Cuddle and chats with my man always makes me feel better when I’m feeling off.
WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE WANTING TO RECONNECT WITH THEIR OWN NATURAL WAY OF BEING AND FIND THE BEAUTY WITHIN THEMSELVES?
Learn to trust your intuition and follow the nudges your soul is giving you. Pay attention to the things you’ve been feeling drawn to or interested in lately – maybe it’s trying yoga, starting to meditate, go on a health retreat. Maybe it’s to text that guy or say no to that event or try a different way of eating. The more intuitive your approach, the more you’ll become aligned with your authentic truth and purpose and the better and more beautiful you’ll feel. It’s a learning curve and quite a journey but so worth it!
